William/3s Brooks was born 12 Dec 1698 at Deerfield, Massachusetts.1
With his parents and sister he was a victim of the French and Indians in the Deerfield Raid of 29 Feb 1703/4.2,3 At least 29 of 109 captives were killed on the forced march to Canada, but Rev. John Williams, in his account of the ordeal, says, "General Hoyt has procured the names of the principal part of the prisoners who were taken at Deerfield, and who were left in Canada after the return of Mr. Williams," and includes siblings William and Mary Brooks among the survivors in captivity. However, "An Account of ye Desolation of Deerfield," contained in the Hampshire County Recorder's Book, in the handwriting of Samuel Partridge of Hatfield, names Mary and William Brooks among those "Slain in ye Fort."4,5,6,7

William/3s Brooks was born 1 Aug 1708 at Springfield, Massachusetts.1 Then of Simsbury, he married, 2 Mar 1731/32 at Enfield, Connecticut,(int. 1 Jan, Enfield), Esther Kibbe of E., daughter of James Kibbe and Hannah Kelsey, with whom he had eight children.2,3
By 1775, with his children gone and his wife possibly deceased, he seems to have fallen into reduced straits. 6 Mar 1775, he received the first of many tax abatements recorded in the Enfield town books, for 4s. 4½p.4
By 15 Mar 1788, when "Wm Brooks took Hannah Gains to Keep," he was clearly indigent and no longer in his own house.5 Six days later, on 21 Mar, the town executed with Capt. Ephraim Pease a year's lease of his house "by Freshwater," for the aged William Brooks to live in. "Brooks pays the town in keeping Hannah Gains from June 1787 to June 1788," the town record notes. Hannah Gain(e)s was probably an indigent and elderly widow with no relatives to take her in.6 19 Feb 1789, the town paid him £3.10 towards keeping her.7
This mode of living continued through the 1790 census, when William's household included himself and one female, undoubtedly Hannah.8
William died 28 May 1795 (g.s.), a. 86.9 He is buried in Enfield Street Cemetery.9,10
