Humphrey/1 Barrett, born in England circa 15921, there married Martha Mary Wheeler.2 He settled, 1639, at Concord, Massachusetts, "where he had a farm of three hundred acres and a 'house lot' of twelve acres near the centre of the town." Shattuck says he "settled where Abel B. Heywood now [1835] lives."2,3
22 Aug 1653, Humphrey Barat was one of a number of Concord signatories to an agreement to contribute an aggregate of £5 yearly to "the colledge at Cambridge," later Harvard College, for a term of seven years.4 Admitted a freeman of Concord, 6 May 16575, he died there 7 Nov 16626, and his widow 15 Aug 1663, a. 54.7 16 Dec 1662, his will was attested by Timothy Wheeler and John Smedley, and his inventory by his son and executor Dea. Humphrey Barrett Jr.8

His wife Elizabeth died at Concord 21 Dec 16746, and there he married (2), 23 Mar 1674/75, Mary/2 Potter, daughter of Dea. Luke/1 Potter and Mary/2 Edmunds.7 He was admitted a freeman of Concord, 24 May 16828, witnessed the will of Capt. Timothy/1 Wheeler of Concord, 1 Mar 1686/879,10, and was Concord's deputy to the General Court, 1691.11 Named overseer, 20 Apr 1691, with Steven Willis of Medford, in the will of Mary Wheeler of Concord, and each provided 10s. for the task.10
His wife Mary died at Concord 17 Nov 1713.12 There Humphrey, ensign of the trainband and deacon, died 3 Jan 1715/16 ("aged 86 yrs.", g.s.)13,14 He is interred in the South Burying Ground with his 2nd wife15,16, their gravestones each inscribed, The Memory of the Just is Blessed.16
Concord's 1666 tax list notes Richard Temple in the North District "near Barrett's Mills." Since Humphrey was the town's only Barrett poll at the time, the mills appear to have been his. 109 years later, Barrett's Mills would be the target of the British expeditionary force which arrived at Concord on April 19th, 1775.4

Capt. Joseph/3 Barrett, born 31 Jan 1678/79 at Concord, Massachusetts,1, there married, 24 Dec 1701, Rebecca/4a Minot of Concord, daughter of Dr. James/3 Minot and Rebecca/3a Wheeler, with whom he had 8 children.2 (Their siblings Capt. Benjamin/3 Barrett and Lydia/4a Minot also married.) His wife died at Concord 23 Jun 1738, a. 533, and he 4 Apr 1763, a. 84.4 They are interred in the South Burying Ground.5,6
